PETITION

To support the right to self-determination for the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh, we invite you to sign the following petition addressed to the Federal Council and the Federal Assembly of the Swiss Confederation (text reproduced below): https://www.change.org/RecognizeNagornoKarabakh

The undersigned call on the Swiss Confederation’s Federal Council and Federal Assembly to:

  1. Recognize the right to self-determination for the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh as the only possibility to guarantee their security and right to life on their ancestral land.

  2. Sanction Azerbaijan economically and diplomatically for its war crimes against Nagorno-Karabakh and its people.

  3. Immediately deploy substantial humanitarian aid to the civilian population of Nagorno-Karabakh.

On 27 September 2020, Azerbaijan initiated an armed conflict against the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh with a massive, coordinated attack on the entire front line. The aggression was carried out with the logistical, tactical and operational support of the Turkish army. On November 9, 2020, Armenia was forced to sign a ceasefire agreement under unfavorable conditions that ignored the issues related to the future status of Nagorno-Karabakh.

More than half of the population of Karabakh has fled the bombs and massacres which would have been inevitable if the Karabagh Armenians had had to lose. The International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) issued a genocide alert for the population of Karabagh at the end of October. Azerbaijan's war crimes (use of cluster bombs, incendiary phosphorus munitions, decapitations, summary executions of prisoners, and the use of Syrian jihadist mercenaries) have been widely documented. Azerbaijan has thus lost all moral rights over Nagorno-Karabakh and its inhabitants. Only self-determination can guarantee their security. It is high time that the international community, starting with Switzerland, recognized this fact.

As the Swiss did more than a century ago, today we call on our authorities to respond to the call for justice and to use all possible means, at the national and international level, to prevent new crimes against humanity. As a candidate for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council, Switzerland must act urgently.
